Guidelines
These regulations apply not only to the recognition of external study credits from Erasmus partner universities, but also from partner institutions of other exchange programmes.
For the recognition of external study credits from a different field of study than Economics, the regulations of the respective department apply.
Please contact the relevant subject coordinator directly.
It is strongly recommended to clarify the eligibility of external courses for credit recognition before the start of the exchange.
Eligibility for Credit Recognition
Courses completed at a partner university during the exchange period will appear on the transcript of records with both the grade and the number of ECTS credits, and they will be included in the grade average. A course taken at a partner university can be recognised towards the Economics programme at the University of Bern if it is clearly an economics-related course, and it differs sufficiently in content and form from courses already completed in Bern. Only successfully passed courses can be recognised. A valid proof of achievement must be provided. Language courses are not eligible for credit recognition.
The number of ECTS credits that can be recognised from external study achievements is limited:
-
For the Economics major, a maximum of 30 ECTS credits may be recognised.
-
For the Economics minor, up to 50% of the required ECTS credits may be recognised.
Please note that in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, a total of no more than 30 ECTS credits from external study achievements can be recognised towards degree programmes of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences (WiSo Faculty).
Credit Recognition Procedure
The form “Recognition of External Study Credits at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences, University of Bern” is available from the Dean’s Office of the WiSo Faculty (download in german only).
Courses completed at a partner university and intended for recognition in Bern must be listed on this form.
The completed form, together with a short course descriptions, a copy of the transcript, and an explanation of the partner university’s grading scale, must be submitted to Professor Letina for approval and signature.
The original form is then forwarded to the Dean’s Office, and students will receive a copy for their records.
The recognition process is completed and the credits are officially entered into the transcript once the student presents the original transcript from the partner university to the Dean’s Office.
Grade Conversion
The conversion of ECTS grades from European partner universities into University of Bern grades is carried out as follows:
